Urushi Lacquerware Workshop
The true charm of lacquerware lies in its deep colors and beautifully lustrous texture. Urushi (natural lacquer) is an outstanding natural paint used since ancient times. It is highly resistant to acids, alkalis, oils, and moisture, while also acting as an electrical insulator, corrosion inhibitor, and insect repellent. It can be mixed with other materials to serve as a strong adhesive for restorations, and thus has long been used for everyday items like tableware and furniture.
The 3 Steps of Lacquer Art
- Tai (Base Crafting): Shaping the foundation. Base materials can include wood, bamboo, leather, hemp cloth, washi (Japanese paper), metal, ceramics, or FRP. The crafting process is carefully adapted to suit each shape and material.
- Kyushitsu (Lacquering): Applying the base coats and lacquer.
- Kashoku (Decoration): Adding the final decorative touches.
The lacquering process involves many intricate steps and takes time, as the lacquer must properly dry and harden (cure) at each stage. However, the finished product is exceptionally durable and completely safe for everyday use.
Please Note: Fully cured lacquer does not cause allergic reactions. However, due to its natural properties, raw lacquer may occasionally cause skin irritation (rashes). We will provide thorough instructions on safe handling, but please let us know in advance if you have any concerns.
